Fajuyi Memorial Park – A Beautiful Tourist Attraction in Ekiti State
Fajuyi Memorial Park has become one of the popular tourist attractions in Ekiti State. The Park was established in memory of Adekunle Fajuyi. He is a vibrant military Governor of the Western region of Nigeria in the sixties. He was murdered in a counter military coup on 29th July 1966. About Adekunle Fajuyi His full name is Francis Adekunle Fajuyi. Adekunle Fajuyi was born on 26th June 1926 in Ekiti State. He is a Nigerian soldier from Ekiti origin. He became the first military Governor of the Western Region now known as South West, Nigeria. Fajuyi came into power after a successful coup in January 1966. He joined the Nigerian military in 1943. Adekunle Fajuyi was appointed as the Western Region Governor by late General Aguiyi Ironsi. Aguiyi was the first Nigerian Military Head of State after he forcefully took over from the civilian. He forcefully took power from the civilian government leaving some top military personnel and the then prime minister Tafawa Balewa dead. Aguiyi Ironsi then appointed Fajuyi as the Governor of the Western region. This didn’t go well with some top major from the Northern side who in retaliation, plotted a counter-coup which left Fajuyi and Aguiyi Ironsi dead in a bloody battle.In a bid to make Ekiti State a tourist hub, the Government has created facilities for fun lovers. The spring was made very popular by a Baptist Missionary Rev John S McGee in 1950 after he discovered it during missionary work in Ekiti State, Nigeria.
