Fela Shrine – History of the New Afrika Shrine

The New Afrika Shrine which is also known as Fela Shrine is a tourist attraction in Lagos. The Afrika Shrine is one of the popular entertainment and tourist centres in Lagos. It is an open-air music and entertainment centre which was built to honour late Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Fela Shrine also hosts the yearly Felabration. Felabration is a yearly music festival in honour of the late king of Afro music Fela Anikulapo Kuti. Why The name Africa Shrine? Fela was fond of calling his performance ground a Shrine. He often makes some ritual to the deities and some of the greatest black men that have ever lived. He starts by asking the crowd for a minute of silence. The name was however adopted for all his music performance venue. About Fela Kuti Fela Anikulapo Kuti is a renowned Nigerian Afro musician who rose to fame around the ’70s with his style of music. He is known as the father of Afro music. Afro music is an Africa inspired music rich in culture, rhythm and sound.Fela was born into a Christian family he gave up his religion to indigenous religion. His father was a prominent teacher and the head of the Teachers Union. His mother, on the other hand, was a prominent activist.He was sent to the UK to study law, Fela fell in love with music and decided to study music instead of law.He was a freedom fighter, a politician, a human right activist and a multi-talented musician. History of the Afrika Shrine It all started from the Afro Spot in Alagomeji Yaba. This was the first location of Fela shrine. The Old Afrika Shrine evolved around the 1970s. Fela Shrine as it was often called was invaded by the military government due to his resistance against the military rule and their abuse of the fundamental human right. He then moved to another the Empire Hotel in Mushin. Due to frequent raids, by the Nigerian military. Fela Shrine also known as the Afrika Shrine or Kalakuta republic was burnt to the ground in 1977. That was the first Afrika Shrine The second Afrika Shrine by Fela was located at Pepple Street in Ikeja, the capital of Lagos. The building however was taken over by the owners after the lease expired. The new Afrika Fela Shrine is currently managed by the first son of Fela known as Femi Kuti. The new shrine was built after the death of Fela and it was unveiled on October 2000. It has since served as the host for Felabration. The New Afrika Shrine is now wearing a new look. It is bigger and better than the other two shrines. The new Afrika shrine was opened to the public on 15th October 2000. If you want to get a taste of afro music, you can make it a date on Thursday where Femi Kuti cheers the crowd with offers a free Afro music show. However, in October 2000, the new building was unveiled by Femi Kuti to celebrate Felabration that year.Over the years, the New Afrika Shrine has become one of the top tourist attractions in Nigeria and it has witnessed visits from president, governors, vice presidents, commissioners, politicians, celebrities and tourist from all over the world. His popularity grew and the Yoruba settlers nicknamed it Agbadagiri. When the Europeans came during the pre-colonial trade, for easy pronunciation they coined the name Badagry. That was how the name Badagry came into existence.The people of Badagry are mostly the migrant from Dahomey and the Awori’s from South-West Nigeria. About the Badagry Heritage Museum The Badagry Heritage Museum is divided into eight different sections showcasing different relics within the museum. It holds hundreds of slave and historical relics covering the over 300 years of slavery in Nigeria.The Badagry Heritage Museum is a remembrance of the slave trade era and a place where we can look back to see how far we have gone as a people. It also features artefacts, drawings, paintings and sculptures from the slave trade era.Badagry Heritage Museum has an impressive collection of artefacts and relics dating as far back as 300 years. Sections of the Badagry Heritage Museum 1. The Introductory Gallery: this section gives an introduction to Badagry, the people, culture, rulers, the leadership and the past leaders in Nigeria. 2. The Capture: This section is an emotional one, it houses some relics of slavery like the chains that were used to tie slaves, there are also pictures of slaves in captivity and some of the instruments used in torturing and capturing slaves such as the mouth muzzles, the handcuffs etc. 3. Transportation: This section explains how slaves were transported and it has a replica of the ship that were used to transport slaves during the slave trade era. The ships were also used to export other organic products from Badagry. 4. The equipment: This is a section for some of the equipment and machinery used during the slave trade era. It has a safe which is hundred of years old which contains documents dating hundred of years. It also contains files and currencies used during the slave trade era. 5. The Resistance and Punishment: The section has the statue of a dog trying to strangle a slave that is trying to escape. There are different reasons why a slave could be punished, it could either be as a result of disobedience, stealing, rebellion etc. There are different object used in There are different kinds of slave the domestic and the field slaves. The domestic ones are the one that works within the homes and do the bidding of the slave master while the field slaves are the ones that work in the field. 6. The Industry: This further explains the process of the slave trade industry, how the slaves are captured, how they were stored in the slave barracoon until the slave masters are ready to pick them. Once the slave masters come, they are auctioned off at the slave market, the fit slaves are then sent to the ship after they must have been examined and stamped fit by the ship surgeon. Each slave is branded with the initials of the slave master for easy recognition. 7. Ther Integration: This section shows how the slave dealers adapted the slaves into the new environment to ensure they get the best out of them. 8. The Abolition: This section gives more information about the people and the heroes who fought for the abolition of the slave trade. It also gives more information about the end of slavery and the heroic story of a woman who saved over 300 people from their slavery. Kayaking In Lagos Lagoon With Kampari Tours

Kayaking has always been on my bucket list of adventurous things to do in Lagos. I am a lover of adventure, sightseeing, hiking etc. I have had the opportunity to do the kayak in different destinations in Lagos. Mapo Hall is one of the oldest buildings in Nigeria located in Ibadan, Oyo State. Mapo Hall is a colonial building and it is the official City hall of Ibadan and Oyo state. The City of Ibadan Ibadan is the largest city in Nigeria and the third-largest city in Africa.Ibadan is the city of Hills and it is made up of seven different hills which form part of what is today known as Ibadan. One of the famous Hills that made up the geographical location is the Oke Mapo. From the hills, you will have a vantage view of the entire Ibadan. About Mapo Hall Mapo Hall was built by a Wellish Engineer named Robert Taffy Jones who was at that time a structural and road engineer. He was notable for his exceptional skills and he also built the popular Bowers Tower and Manor House in Iseyin Oyo State. Mapo hall was built by the British under the leadership of Captain W.A Ross the Resident of Ibadan province.The hall was completed and commissioned in 1929 by the British Governor and Commander in Chief of Nigeria Sir Creame Thompson. The Building The construction of Mapo Hall took four years from 1925 to 1929 and was valued at £24,000. The foundation was laid by Captain W.A Ross who was then The Resident of Oyo Province. However, it was commissioned by His Excellency Sir Graeme Thompson during the reign of Oba Shiyanbola Ladugbolu, who was then the Alaafin of Oyo and Chief Oyewole the Baale of Ibadan.It was built on 5,969 acres of land. The construction was modelled after St Georges’s Hall Liverpool in the United Kingdom. The building has the ancient British Architecture. Mapo Hall is still standing till date after almost a century as a relics of the colonial administrative rule in Nigeria. It reminds us of the political, historical colonial rule and the slave trade era. After almost a century things have hardly changed. Mapo Hall still stands as a centre for all government administrative task, a meeting place for politicians etc. A day in Mapo Hall will feature politicians carrying out their administrative task, residents coming to process one document or the other.
