 Europe has fifty independent countries. This post will be unravelling the smallest countries in Europe. Some of these countries have a history dating back many decades. This list focuses on the smallest countries in Europe by landmass and population.

The Vatican City is in Rome, it is an independent state with a population of about 900 people. It is the smallest country in Europe. The Vatican city is the official headquarters of the Roman Catholic Church. It is also the smallest country in the world in terms of population and size. This city plays an important role in Christianity. It also holds the position of the smallest independent state in the world. Despite its size, half of the city is made of green vegetation and gardens. Due to its significant roles and ancient structures, it is one of the top tourist attractions in Europe. The official language of this city is Italian. Vatican city became a sovereign state on February 11, 1929, after signing a treaty with the Italian government. This small country is sited at the Vatican Mount.

Monako takes the second position of the smallest countries in the world. Monaco is a sovereign state in Europe. It shares a border with the Atlantic on one side and France on the other side. It has a record of 16,403 people per square kilometre and also holds the record for the highest number of millionaire and billionaire per capital. The country has the lowest poverty and unemployment rate in the world. The official language is French. The other languages spoken in Monaco include Monegasque, Occitan and Italian. Over the years, it has become one of the popular destinations for the rich and wealthy.

San Marino

The Republic of San Marino is the third smallest country in Europe with a population of barely 30,000 people. It shares a border with Italy. San Marino is located In the valley of Apennines. It is a mountainous country with a lot to see and do. The official language is Italian another popular language in San Marino is Romagnol. San Marino has about 33,285 people. San Marino is a hilly country with most of its surface area covered by hills.

Liechtenstein is the fourth-smallest country in Europe. It also holds the record for the sixth smallest countries in the world. Liechtenstein shares a border with Austria and Switzerland. It has a population of barely 38,000 people. The official language of Liechtenstein is German. An important attraction is the Vaduz Castle. It is notable for winter sporting activities due to its location In the Alps. This Alpine country is a must-visit for adventure lovers.

Kosovo is also one of the smallest countries in Europe. It is a self-declared independent country. Kosovo shares a border with Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia. It has a landmass of about 4,203 square miles. The country is blessed with beautiful vegetations with different species of wildlife.
